A good photo takes one minute.

  1. Stand by a window in daylight.

Face the glass. A lamp turns skin yellow and the reading goes warm.

  2. Turn every filter off.

Beauty mode and portrait mode repaint your skin. We need the plain photo.

  3. Hold a sheet of white paper next to your face.

It shows us what white looks like in your light, so we can correct for it.

Before we measure, the tool checks your photo.

If it cannot measure the photo, it says why and how to fix it. These are the most common answers.

  • Light too colored. A lamp or a sunset tints your skin. Face a window in daylight and take it again.

  • Looks filtered. The skin reads pinker than skin can be. Turn off beauty mode and send the plain photo.

  • Face too small. Move closer, or send the original photo, not a screenshot.

  • Good. We measure right away.

How this color analysis works

This is not a quiz. flatterlab measures your photo. A face model finds your face and marks skin, hair and eyes. If you hold a sheet of white paper next to your face, the tool uses it to take the tint of your light out of the photo. It then reads the color of your skin at four spots, of both irises and of your hair, as numbers in CIELAB. From those numbers it works out your undertone and your season family. All of this runs in your browser. The photo is not uploaded, and there is no sign-up and no email step. One photo takes a few seconds once the measuring tool has loaded.
